It sees a middle-class couple terrorised in their home by a gang of youths, but if Williams has something important to say about hoodie culture, it's sadly lost in the haze of pot smoke. All of the action unfolds at a house on Muswell Hill, a famous yuppie enclave in the otherwise crime-ridden borough of Haringey in North London. It's a stuffy environment made even more oppressive by the quiet bickering over dinner between Christine Rachael Blake and Mike Tom Butcher. He hints at an affair she had some time ago, but it's the sort of banal conflict, flatly lit and photographed, that brings to mind a student film.
Just at the point when you might be starting to wonder what you'll be having for dinner that night, the doorbell rings. The ensuing tussle between Christine and the invading youths happens off screen and Williams sticks with that approach throughout. Blake is very good in the role; always teetering on the edge of a nervous breakdown. Just as impressive is how Williams manages to make the film feel like pure exploitation, even though the rough stuff stays out of view.
This includes the rape of Christine, conveyed in muffled shrieks and loud bumps from another room while husband Mike writhes around on his living room carpet, bound and gagged, and totally helpless. It's undeniably disturbing, but Williams offers no insight as to why these kids feel so entitled.
The most compelling reason for their behaviour appears to be boredom. The lads have just gone through the couple's DVD collection and are dismayed to find a bunch of foreign films. He says his current efforts as a soloist came about in similar fashion. In , Tomlinson had become a father. He had some other personal matters to work through and in the summer he went on holiday to Las Vegas to blow off steam. In career terms, he had inched off the hill again, without necessarily considering the gradient of the slope. Tomlinson was booked in to perform it on live TV. Which leads Tomlinson to reason two.
And as a self-aware northerner, from a proudly working class family, this has left Tomlinson with residual guilt to answer about wealth and status that do not feel to him fully earned. And I know, I know it sounds ungrateful. Tomlinson says he has already sweated more for this record than any before. And I understand that. In their One Direction days, no question, Styles got the most attention. The intensity. Tomlinson cannot talk about it with me, not without getting into muddy legal waters, but there was recently a difficult episode involving a small crowd of fans at an airport in LA.
He was travelling with his partner, Eleanor Calder, who is viewed with some distrust by the fiercest corps of Louis fans. Video footage seems to show Calder being surrounded and attacked by a group of girls. Tomlinson, unable to discuss the matter, says to me more generally that he hopes his new music will reveal to fans a more complete version of himself than before.
Loss feels the same. Heartbreak feels the same. The fundamental hurtful things for a human are all the same. Which brings us to reason four. Reason four Tomlinson discusses with caution. Reason four concerns his mum. Johannah Deakin was diagnosed with leukaemia in early And he gives a bleak little laugh when he recalls where he was when the terrible phone call came.
Talk about your places, for something super-traumatic. My mum told me, uh, yeah, that she was definitely terminal. They were unusually close. It was an intimacy he attributes to them being close in age. We at university. The last time I went to the theatrewas yearsago.
